A little curiosity goes a long way

Don't just imagine it.
Learn to design it.

Discover how robot components fit, move and work together—one achievable design project at a time.

Turn ideas into 3D parts

Start with simple sketches, then create precise shapes, brackets and components using real engineering tools.

Make the pieces work together

Explore digital assemblies and moving mechanisms. Learn how individual parts become a larger system.

Build a portfolio of your own

Finish with a collection of CAD designs and present a final robotics design challenge with your team.

Small steps. Bigger possibilities.

01Welcome to 3D SpaceYour project: Personalized name tag

Set up your account, navigate the view cube, zoom, pan and rotate. Create an extruded plate with an engraved name.

02Sketching BasicsYour project: FTC motor mount plate

Explore sketch planes, lines, rectangles, circles and smart dimensioning. Design a flat mounting plate with a hole pattern.

03Extrude & CutsYour project: Custom hex spacer

Turn a sketch into a solid part using extrusions, cuts, fillets and chamfers. Model a spacer with a hexagonal center opening.

04Constraints & PrecisionYour project: Precision bracket

Use horizontal, vertical, coincident, concentric and equal constraints. Create a 90-degree bracket with exact hole spacing.

05Advanced Part ModelingYour project: FTC compliant wheel

Try revolve, linear and circular patterns, and shell features. Design a wheel hub with patterned grip spokes.

06Assemblies & Mates IYour project: Drivetrain corner

Import goBILDA and REV vendor parts. Combine a channel, motor and wheel using fastened and revolute mates.

07Assemblies & Mates IIYour project: Lift system mechanism

Explore slider and planar mates, mate connectors and interference checking to model linear slide motion.

08The Final Design ChallengeYour project: Team design & presentation

Work in a small group on a custom solution to an FTC design challenge, such as an intake roller mount. Share your mechanism and explain your choices.

Projects are created in CAD. Physical fabrication or a take-home robot is not included in the published curriculum.

Is the entire workshop free?

Yes. Participation in the eight-week workshop is free. Equipment and account setup requirements will be confirmed with the final registration details.

What will my child actually learn?

The workshop focuses on computer-aided design (CAD) for robotics. Students progress from sketching and modeling parts to assembling digital mechanisms and presenting a team design project.

Does my child need CAD experience?

The workshop is for children ages 10 and up. The curriculum starts with navigation and basic sketching before progressing to assemblies. Contact the school if you have questions about prerequisites.

Do we need to bring a laptop?

Onshape runs in a web browser on supported devices, including many laptops and Chromebooks. The school will confirm whether to bring a device and how student accounts will be arranged.

When and where are the sessions?

Classes meet on Wednesdays on October 21, October 28, November 4, November 11, November 18, December 2, December 9, and December 16. There is no class on November 25. School Address: 2231b N. Tracy Blvd.

Who teaches the workshop?

Competitive FTC robotics students from Apex Robotics teach the curriculum, with adult mentors present.
